Age-Friendly Business

The Age-Friendly Business scheme was designed to engage local businesses with the 50+ community in Thanet. It consisted of a reward card scheme for over 50s to access discounts and a commitment from businesses to work towards becoming age-friendly.

When we started the Ageless Thanet project, one of the things people told us they would really value was having discount cards for local shops and services. We researched and developed the reward card scheme which became a key driver behind the uptake of Ageless Thanet services. In total, we worked with more than 480 businesses who also had access to our free Age-Friendly Business Toolkit and Age-friendly Business Training.

Businesses were listed on our app, website and in our printed directory. We hosted Facebook groups for businesses to network with each other and to connect directly with cardholders to offer incentives or discounts.

Ageless Entrepreneurs was a training offer for people over 50 who wanted to start or grow their own small business. It provided masterclasses in all aspects of running a business, one-to-one support, networking and business development opportunities. The course supported 146 people to gain confidence as well as develop business skills, with some going on to sign up as an Age-Friendly Business, offering services to Ageless Thanet participants or other community projects.

There are currently over 61,000 older adults aged 50+ living in Thanet, 43% of Thanet's population. This number is expected to grow significantly over the coming years, with the prediction that by 2037 one in every two adults in Thanet will be over 50. Age-Friendly Businesses cater to this market.
